His founding of Cipla was deeply influenced by India's Swadeshi movement and the ideals of Mahatma Gandhi — a belief that India's healthcare independence was as important as its political freedom. So committed was he to this cause that he transferred all his patent and proprietary formulas to the company without seeking a single rupee in royalties — an act of extraordinary selflessness that set the moral tone for everything Cipla would become.

In 1939, Mahatma Gandhi personally visited Cipla, inspiring Dr. Hamied to dedicate the company entirely to producing vital and life-saving medicines for India. When World War II brought critical shortages of imported medicines, it was Cipla that stepped up — manufacturing essential drugs domestically at a time when the nation needed it most.

Dr. Hamied's legacy did not end with his generation. His son, Dr. Yusuf Hamied, carried the torch forward with equal conviction — famously offering generic AIDS antiretroviral drugs to developing nations at a fraction of the global price, an act that saved millions of lives and cemented Cipla's place in history as a champion of affordable global healthcare.

Dr. Khwaja Abdul Hamied wasn't just a scientist or a businessman — he was a nationalist, a humanitarian, and a visionary who proved that the best pharmaceutical company in India could be built on principles just as much as profits.
