Meet Dr. T.M.A. Pai
About Dr. T.M.A. Pai — Founder, Manipal Hospitals
The story of Manipal Hospitals begins with Dr. T.M.A. Pai — an Indian doctor, educationist, and philanthropist whose vision laid the foundation for what would become one of India's leading healthcare providers. Born with an extraordinary sense of social responsibility and a deep understanding of the gaps in India's medical landscape, Dr. Pai believed from the very beginning that quality healthcare and medical education should not be a privilege — they should be a right accessible to every Indian, regardless of background or economic standing.
Seeing the scarcity of medical education facilities available in India at the time, Dr. Pai felt that the government alone could not be depended upon to provide adequate educational infrastructure — and so he conceived a novel scheme wherein the cost of medical education would be borne partly by the students themselves. That vision, bold and unconventional for its time, took two years of persistence and persuasion before it became a reality — and on 30th June 1953, Kasturba Medical College in Manipal, Karnataka was born, marking the first chapter of what would become the most trusted hospital network in India.
The Manipal Group was founded by Dr. T.M.A. Pai and later advanced by Dr. Ramdas Pai and Dr. Ranjan Pai, whose legacy in medical education and healthcare continues to underpin the group's values and growth to this day. Each generation carried forward the same founding conviction — that patient-first, ethical, and affordable healthcare in India is not just a mission statement but a moral obligation.
Manipal Hospitals as a standalone entity came into existence in 1991 with the launch of its 650-bed flagship hospital at Old Airport Road, Bangalore — a landmark moment that signalled the beginning of a new era in multi-specialty tertiary and quaternary care in India. From that single hospital, the vision grew into something far greater.
Today, the legacy of Dr. T.M.A. Pai lives on across 49 hospitals, 24 cities, and over 12,600 beds — a testament to one man's unwavering belief that every single life is worth fighting for, and that the best hospital care in India should be within reach of every patient who needs it.
