Kalanithi Maran is an Indian media proprietor and the chairman and founder of Sun Group — one of the most influential and diversified media conglomerates in India, encompassing television channels, newspapers, weeklies, FM radio stations, DTH services, a cricket team, and a movie production house. His story is one of extraordinary ambition, strategic brilliance, and an instinctive understanding of what Indian audiences truly want from their media. 

Born into a politically influential family — with his father Murasoli Maran serving as the former Union Minister of Commerce and his grand-uncle being Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi — Kalanithi had every reason to step into politics. But his heart belonged to business. He completed his graduation from Loyola College, Chennai, and went on to pursue an MBA from the University of Scranton, Pennsylvania, USA — returning to India not with political ambitions, but with a media vision that would change the country forever. 

In 1993, he founded Sun TV with an initial investment of just ₹20 lakhs — a seemingly modest beginning for what would become one of India's most dominant media empires. From that single channel grew a nationwide broadcasting network spanning television, print, radio, and digital — touching the lives of hundreds of millions of Indians every single day. 

Forbes magazine recognised Kalanithi Maran as the "Television King of Southern India", and he has received the prestigious Young Businessman Award from both CNBC and Ernst & Young — honours that reflect a career built not just on scale, but on sheer media ingenuity. His expansion into FM radio through Red FM brought that same vision of mass entertainment, vibrant programming, and deep cultural connection to the airwaves of India. 

With 20 television channels and 46 FM radio stations, Kalanithi Maran owns a commanding share of India's biggest national broadcasting network — a testament to a man who turned ₹20 lakhs and a bold idea into one of the most powerful media empires in Indian history.
